Everything new is old again. Old friends. Old band mates. New music. Brian Bice (instruments, vocals, songs, producer) and Jason Buecker (drums, producer) have come together to put out an album of fresh material. Having played together sporadically since meeting as freshmen at Georgia Southern, the Atlanta duo decided it was time to put their noses to the grindstone and commit to finishing a full-length recording. In a sense, it’s bizzare that guys who have been making music for 17 years have only recently released their debut album, even more so considering multi-instrumentalist and songwriter Brian has written hundreds, if not thousands, of songs. Nevertheless, the album Subconscious Scuba is complete, and the boys are pretty happy about it. Better late than never.
Employing a do-it-yourself ethic, the band used their home studios to mix a batch of Brian’s recordings. The result is a diverse collection of 11 songs held together by common thematic threads--joy, melancholy, love, death, consciousness, dreams. In addition, the songs’ sonic textures and lyrical symbolism parallel each other by sharing a certain multi-layered quality. The tunes are, at times, catchy, but they are not shallow. A listener may hear hints of Beck, The Police, The Beatles or Radiohead, but Sapleo doesn’t really sound like anyone else. |
